Painting response: Veiled is an exquisite and provocative painting. The female figure captivates and yet she barely exists. The artist conceals all background from our view, as if exaggerating the function of the burka as it hides the woman within from society's view. And yet, she does reveal herself. Through the "window of the soul," her eyes communicate a sorrow so deep it is beyond the personality. One cannot help but resonate with this veiled woman, who seems to hold the world's sorrow and its secrets at the same time. - Madeleine Kasem
